This was the flag of the Papal States "until 1808" according to Wikipedia. It is unknown when this flag was designed, nor when it was officially recognized as a flag of the Papal States.

From ~2006 to 2022, an incorrect version of the 2001/1929 flag was used on Wikipedia and circulated heavily around the internet, and eventually made its way onto physical flags. In this version, the inside of the papal tiara is colored red instead of white. It is unknown where this flag came from, or who made it.
